God’s Last Name
by Skip Moen, D. Phil.
Of, in this context as in belonging to. A preposition to show connection. It was often used to identified who you were in a larger community, as in I am Robert son OF John.
In Hebrew it look like this: שֶׁל
I belong to my Dad. Is it possible that God belongs to Israel? Did any other group of people belong to this God, YHVH? Is it a mutual agreement, or covenant? I belong to you and you belong to me? If we have a God that changes allegiance/alignment then what can we expect in the future?
Or, is He the God of Israel (of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob), and we chose to be part of that covenant with that God (YHVH) and are grafted into that family, so now I am a Son OF YHVH. I belong to Him and He belongs to me. Ephraim is my hope, that we may one day align with Judah and Ezekiel 37 will come to pass.
Of (שֶׁל), a very small word but in this context it has eternal implications…
